Hosted by Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), the 11th International Conference on Acid Rock Drainage (ICARD)/International Mine Water Association (IMWA) 2018 conference was held in Pretoria, South Africa from September 10th to 14th, 2018. More than 400 attendees with over 180 presentations around the globe to this world’s leading mine water conference. The conference theme—“Risk to Opportunity” means that risks are involved in managing or mitigating mine water, and specifically that acid rock/mine drainage must be considered as opportunities. Topics related to AMD and mine water issues relating to active mining and mine closure were discussed during the “green” conference.
Xi’an Research Institute of China Coal Technology and Engineering Group (Xi’an CCTEG) contributed a paper with the title of “Coal mine water hazard accurate detection and efficient control technology based on comprehensive drilling methods” to the conference. Invited by the president of the general assembly, on behalf of Prof. Dong Shuning who is Chairman of board of Xi’an CCTEG, Dr. Liu Zaibin from hydrogeology institute of Xi’an CCTEG released a keynote speech with the title of “Water Control Technologies in China’s Coal Mines” and an oral presentation. Products and services of Xi’an CCTEG, China’s coal mine water hazard situation and water control technologies were introduced systematically. Through the communication and feedback after the speech, experts from many countries such as Australia, Canada and South Africa expressed strong interest in Xi’an CCTEG’s technologies. Further international academic cooperation should be strengthened, and Xi’an CCTEG’s advantages in mine water control field will be demonstrated.
