Recently, the 6th Member Congress and Coal Industry Development Conference of the China National Coal Association was held in Beijing. At the conference, the 2025 Science and Technology Award of the China National Coal Association was presented. The "Technology and Equipment for Automated Directional Drilling with Geological Steering in Underground Coal Mines" developed by CCTEG Xi'an Research Institute was included in the award list, reflecting the institute's leadership and benchmark value in coal geological support.
Technology and Equipment for Automated Directional Drilling with Geological Steering in Underground Coal Mines has been developed to meet the construction requirements of ultra-long, large-diameter directional boreholes for refined geological exploration and disaster prevention in coal mines. It has pioneered a series of high-power automated directional drilling rigs for underground coal mines, invented a wired geosteering measurement-while-drilling (MWD) system based on dynamic azimuthal natural gamma radiation, developed large-diameter wired dynamic transmission directional drilling tools, and advanced geosteering drilling technology for underground coal mines. These innovations have achieved a leap forward in directional borehole trajectory control from "geometric steering" to "geological steering".
We've promoted and applied this achievement in Shanxi, Anhui, and Henan. It has increased the coal and rock stratum drilling efficiency by over 25%, reduced the number of branch boreholes by 70%, cut the construction crew size by 25%, and set a new industry record for a single-run borehole with a diameter of Φ200 mm and a length of 727.5 meters, yielding remarkable economic and social benefits.
